The King: Amber Wood and Musk, After Dark

A black coat, a late table and a room that goes quiet for a moment when he walks in. The story of The King - amber wood, musk and the only silver crown in the court.

It is a little after nine. The restaurant is full, the conversation is loud, and nobody looks up when the door opens - until the air changes.

It is not a loud scent. That is the point. It arrives as warmth before it arrives as anything you could name: dry, polished wood, something faintly spiced, and underneath it a softness that seems to come from the skin itself. By the time he has sat down, the table has noticed. Nobody says anything. Somebody leans a little closer.

That is The King.

What is inside

The King is built on two pillars: amber wood and musk. Amber wood gives it its backbone - woody, ambery and quietly spicy, the kind of warmth you associate with old libraries and good leather. Musk gives it its glow, a clean, luminous softness that keeps all that wood from ever feeling heavy.

Because it is an extrait de parfum, highly concentrated and oil-based, The King does not shout in the first minute and disappear by lunchtime. It settles, deepens and stays.

The bottle

Matte black faceted glass, a pale silver label and a silver crown picked out in black enamel. Every other scent in the Regal court is crowned in gold. The King alone wears silver - fitting for a scent that prefers to be noticed rather than announced.

How to wear it

Two sprays is enough: one at the base of the throat, one on the wrist. It is at its best in the evening and in the cooler months, over a dark jacket or a crisp white shirt. For the office, one spray under the collar keeps it close.

His Queen

The King shares its amber wood and musk with The Queen, who adds jasmine to the same foundation. Worn side by side, they sound like two halves of one conversation - which is exactly why the Coffret Royal pairs them in one box.
